BALTHUS (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola) (1908-2001).  French painter.  Reclusive child prodigy who painted street scenes and interiors in a style of poetic naturalism.  His late work depicted adolescent dreams of women.

Rare Photograph Signed, 4to, n.p., n.d. [ca 1990].

This is a rare 3/4-length portrait of the noted painter, smoking a cigarette, while holding his cane with his left hand.  In a sweater, Balthus is seated with a tin of paint brushes in the foreground.  Signed in older age across the light table, "Balthus de Rola."(#5505-0122)

Balthus was considered a reclusive painter, but his depictions of the banalities of everyday life with monumental dignity were mostly expressions of Romanticism.  Autograph material by Balthus has always been scarce, and a signed photograph even more so.

BARBIER, GEORGES (1882-1932).  French artist, considered one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century.

Autograph Letter Signed, in French, on a picture postcard showing an 18th century house in Nantes, Nantes, Tuesday, n.d.

He begins asking his female correspondent, “How are you, dear lady. This interminable winter is truly hard to bear. From here,  Spring’s hair looks powdered with frost and its nose is red. My life is rather calm and rather silly, but it fits me perfectly.  A few retarded Judex films barely pull me out of my torpor, but I no longer like Musidora very much. Her cheeks sag, and she rolls her haggard eyes…I am thinking of going back in a few days and I will be happy to show you my new…rings, of course, but with more colors than the witch’s that shine with all the fires of the Sabbath… ancient, opulent….”  He signs this intriguing letter, “Georges Barbier”.

Barbier is best known for his theater designs, ballet costumes, and particularly for his high fashion illustrations.  He led a group of illustrators from the Beaux Arts School known for their flamboyance as much as their art. Barbier also created jewelry, glass and wallpaper design and worked with Erté to design sets and costumes for the Follies Bergére. He died at the height of his career.

BELLMER, HANS (1902-75).  Polish born, French painter and graphic artist.  Best remembered for his erotic, surreal photographs and etchings.

Autograph Letter Signed,  in French, on pink 4to paper, n.p., n.d.

"Dear friend! Thank you for your letter (arrived this morning) and for the money order, our salvation, which arrived on Tuesday night!  On Wednesday I went to the framer, intent on taking back finally the two pictures and bringing them to someone else.  Martin will have them framed by Tuesday. I'm going back again tomorrow morning and I think he will give me his estimate at that time.  As for your friend's intention to seek a modeling position, I am happy to be of help to you for once.  That is I think I can try to be.  I see two paths to haute couture: one ought to be tried through Georgette Camille, The other through Leonor Fini.  The former seems to me better disposed to help.  When will your companion be in Paris?  Thinking of her planned portrait, I would like to absorb some of the elements thereof right away.  Do you have pictures?  Then, I would like it if you or she would write to me about the portrait, the way you imagine it…or its possibilities.  Do try even to draw some pictures (however you can). Making contact in such a way seems to me very useful.  This way I could think of a portrait of the whole person (not only her face).  On Sunday morning I am to start some studies for Georgette Camille's portrait.  (I fear it will be paid to me indirectly only. Tomorrow morning I will ship to you a roll with letters."  Signed, "Yours Hans Bellmer."

A superb and uncommon letter discussing painting portraits, motivating a fellow artist and connecting him to the surrealist painter, Leonor Fini.

BELLMER, HANS (1902-75). Silesian born, French painter. Best known for the life-sized pubescent female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. He is also commonly thought of, in the art world, as a Surrealist photographer.

Autograph Letter Signed, in French, 4to, n.p., April 10, 1963.

To Mr. Punte.  “I could try to get you a copy of the little book about me through the Copley Foundation.  However, for that it would be necessary to tell me for what reason you wish to have the book, and for what purpose (as a collector, bookseller, or for literary purposes).  Presently a book of mine that may interest you is being published in Germany: ‘The Doll’.  It contains three pieces, which were published in Paris at different times: ‘La Poupee  [The Doll], ‘Les jeux de la Poupee”’[The Game of the Doll], ‘L’Anatomie de l’Image [The Anatomy of the Image].’  Price:49.00 German Marks]” …”  Signed, “Respectfully yours, Hans Bellmer”.

His work was welcomed by the Surrealists under André Breton, because of the references to female beauty and the sexualization of the youthful form.  After the second World War, Bellmer gave up doll making and spent the following decades creating erotic drawings, etchings, sexually explicit photographs, paintings and prints of pubescent girls. In 1954, he met Unica Zürn, who became his long-time model. He continued making work into the 1960s.

Ingres has the honor to ask the director of national museums to grant Miss Zoé Julien an entry card to participate to the studies of the museum galleries”.

Modern opinion has tended to regard Ingres, and the other Neoclassicists of his era, as embodying the Romantic spirit of his time. However, his expressive distortions of form and space make him an important precursor of modern art.

In 1941, Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and, following surgery, he started using a wheelchair.  He did not allow this setback to halt his work, and with the aid of assistants he set about creating cut paper collages, often on a large scale, called gouache découpés. His Blue Nudes series feature prime examples of this technique.  These demonstrate the ability to bring his eye for color and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power.

To Mr. Grainger.  "It is really difficult to do anything with the lithograph you sent me because it lacks character.  It seems to me it would have been easier to have a photograph made of the oil painting of Blangui that exists.  Geffroy could have taken care of this as I explained to you."  Maillol was quite concerned about making a portrait of Blangui and demands "Before I start I shall wait for another letter from you letting me know if I can count on a photograph of the portrait, which would be better in any case than what you sent.  If it is useless to count on this I will do whatever I can but, of course, it will not look at all like Blangui."  In a postscript, Maillol mentions, "I could do the medallion within the next eight days."  A wonderful letter, signed as usual, "Maillol."

This letter is about August Blangui (1805-81), the French socialist who participated in revolutions of 1830, 1848 and was elected President of the Commune de Paris in 1871.  Maillol discusses his working habits, especially working from photographs.
