BELLOWS, GEORGE. (1882-1925). American painter and lithographer. Bellows belongs to the second generation of Social Realist painters, now known as the Ash Can school and was part of the famed Armory show.

Superb Autograph Letter Signed, on "146 East Nineteenth Street" stationery, 8vo, New York, n.d.

"The committee on Progress askes[sic] you to come to the Academy meeting on Wed April 9th 8:30 and vote for the following of new men.[sic] If we vote together we can succeed in electing them." Bellows continues by listing in four columns his colleagues. The artist list, is like a who's who. Luks, Carles, Myer, Prendergast, Sloan, Davey[Davie] Robinson, Lever, Perrine, Kent, Kroll, O'Connor, Quinn and Hopkinson. See you soon We have Rock Ridge Farm all safe in hand again." Signed, "Geo. Bellows." Bellows was awarded a prize at the Academy of Design in 1908 and became an associate member in 1909. In 1913, he was made a full member of the Academy. In this significant letter he was trying to influence voting in the Academy. Letters of Bellows are quite scarce as he died at an early age. Very Good (Item ID: 55)
