He writes a long letter referring to Shakespeare and Shaw as he remarks on his correspondent's book about Shakespeare. He begins with an explanation of how his hospitalization and failing eyesight has slowed his ability to reply to the many requests he gets. "I have on my table many books, plays and verses sent to tme for admiration...I declare to God I wish I had the power and the time to repy to even half of them, but God, not I, made the day to last but twenty-four hours, and a year but a thing of 365 days...." He then writes a more substantive critique. "I have never troubled myself over the Baconian question... questioning the right of Shakespeare's name to go with play and poem; but have simply used both for my profound delight and enjoyment. I have read Shaw's remarks, and have enjoyed them too, and a few other books dealing with Shakespeare's allegories...and so on; but none questioning his right to authorship of the works called by his name...." He thanks his correspondent for sending a book he can keep close to "Shakespeare's Works." Signed, "Sean O'Casey." With two holograph corrections.
