To his good friend, Beryl Harold Levy [made the philosophy of law his special field.] “My dear Dr. Levy: Caring as I do for scholarship, you will have some measure of the way I feel about your desire to dedicate your new book to me. But I must content myself with the simple word that I feel honored. Of course I am eager to see your book, but I shall wait until it comes to me in its appropriate and final garb. When Court is in session, one is largely a prisoner, and, in addition, I have had a bad back that practically eliminates free time and energy. And so I regret much not to be able to see you. Very sincerely yours, Felix Frankfurter.”

He discusses photography in reply to his correspondent's letter. "Your questions are difficult to answer simply! You must define 'abstract'. I think there can be no Abstract photograph (ex1/2ect [sic] the Photogram). I prefer to think of the term 'Extract'...The question really is: do we communicate with others. or really just talk to ourselves? I think 95% of contemporary art is simply talking to ourselves; reaffirming the 'cult' or tribal relationships. I personally feel that the expression of subconscious feelings, etc., is only valid when such expression really touches others and contributes something to their understanding. Very little photography does this, I am afraid...True communication requires more than just creating an image in the minds[sic] eye, and then producing it as a print! No matter what this image means to you, it does not have essential value unless it can create a sense of elevation and comprehension of the realities of the world and of the spirit on the part of the spactator [sic]. Here is where the study of the human situation is as important...than [sic] the study of photography....We make hundreds of...photographers [sic] that say precisely nothing of real human importance...." He signs in full above his typed name, "Ansel Adams." With holograph corrections.

A late, long letter by the great humanitarian writing to former secretary Mary Kensel. "I believe I have gotten where I can speak, and continue to, without backsliding every other day...I have thought of you all, so full of business and pushing on...and our precious V.P. is buried in business! All but slow me have seemed to be working to some purpose...Miss Jennings has been, and gone, she is very busy with getting out what will be her first book. She will have a beautiful volume on Lincoln. There is such pressure brought to bear, by the authors of the news organization here in the city, The Children’s Star League, for me to take the Presidency. So much, they thought depended on it...They were altogether such unexceptional people [but] my selfishness and obstinacy gave way a little at least, and I said I would...They were delighted when, in the meeting I told them a little of First Aid and at once declared They were First-Aid to good thoughts for unfortunate children. This is a long scribble but how could I say anything, and say less?". Signed, “Clara Barton”

An angry letter to L. Hefetz, challenging an article by Joseph Frankl. "When the war [WWI] broke out, I, together with Y. Ben-Zvi (we were both students at the University in Constantinople) went to the military commander of Jerusalem, Zecai [?] Bey, with a request to organize a militia to defend the country. The commander agreed, and several tens of young people, among them the author Y. H. Brenner, enlisted and already began military training. But when the matter became known to Jemal pasha, who was then in Damascus, he gave an order to dissolve this unit. I do not know from where he [Frankl] took some document dated April 6. The story took place in the month of September 1914. As for the 'Zion Mule Corps,' we both opposed it (Jabotinsky also opposed it, and did not join Trumpeldor) but there is no truth to his [Frankl's] claim that we opposed the Legion; Ben-Zvi and I founded the American branch of the Legion, as part which we returned to Aretz [Eretz Israel]. I have no knowledge of any German Foreign Ministry documents about Ben-Zvi or me. I have never heard of any and doubt that Frankl has seen them. There is not one bit of truth in the story that through Brandeis we approached . (?) to allow us to return. This is a foolish made-up story. In Constantinople there was no American Ambassador named Elkins. No copy was ever sent to the German Foreign Ministry. And from where Frankl pulled these made-up fairy tales - I do not know. When did this article appear in The Jewish Chronicle? I will send a denial of this made-up nonsense to the newspaper." Signed, "With thanks, D. Ben Gurion."

Dear Irwin, There is a rather famous picture of Queen Elizabeth which corresponds somewhat to the description of the one your son purchased. This blank white postcard contains a black and white photograph of one of Bill's sculptures on verso. It is a modern flowing and turning shape, which is most reminiscent of the mobius strip, on a pedestal in stone with tall trees in the background, as in a park. Across the top Bill writes an inscription, and signs his name in full across the white margin on the bottom. The caption at the bottom reads, "max bill: rhythmus im raum. 1947-62". In excellent condition.
