He discusses photography in reply to his correspondent's letter. "Your questions are difficult to answer simply! You must define 'abstract'. I think there can be no Abstract photograph (ex1/2ect [sic] the Photogram). I prefer to think of the term 'Extract'...The question really is: do we communicate with others. or really just talk to ourselves? I think 95% of contemporary art is simply talking to ourselves; reaffirming the 'cult' or tribal relationships. I personally feel that the expression of subconscious feelings, etc., is only valid when such expression really touches others and contributes something to their understanding. Very little photography does this, I am afraid...True communication requires more than just creating an image in the minds[sic] eye, and then producing it as a print! No matter what this image means to you, it does not have essential value unless it can create a sense of elevation and comprehension of the realities of the world and of the spirit on the part of the spactator [sic]. Here is where the study of the human situation is as important...than [sic] the study of photography....We make hundreds of...photographers [sic] that say precisely nothing of real human importance...." He signs in full above his typed name, "Ansel Adams." With holograph corrections.

He writes to "Georg" regarding a review. "I was still too moved by what you wrote about me in your article, which I had read just then. Your text is tight, multi-faceted and brilliant. Beautiful the sentence:'mountain ranges, islands, cloudy skies and starry nights are all forms in random constellations.' What is attributed to these forms raises the spirit of their [elixir] to mountain range-spirit, island-spirit, starry night-spirit…." He thanks Georg and signs, "Hans Arp."

Dear Irwin, There is a rather famous picture of Queen Elizabeth which corresponds somewhat to the description of the one your son purchased. I have forgotten the name of the artist but he was undoubtedly one of the fashionable ones of her time. Anyhow, many copies have been made of this painting. It has long been popular. I rather suspect your son bought one of these copies. If you send me a photograph I can probably find out where the original Queen Elizabeth painting hangs. You could not buy it, for sure, for $4,000. I am just about to leave here for sculpture. I expect to be returned to Kansas City (3616 Belleview Ave, K.C. MO) about the middle of December. Why don’t you write me there! Do you still play the piano? Who was that old fairy you studied with in Carthage? I think he came to an unhappy end. I’ve lost his name. Write me a letter about yourself around the first of the new year….” Signs, “Cordially Tom”.

To Henry Whitney Cleveland. "The late Southern Exposition of your city, which lasted for a few years was composed of some of your most prominent citizens, its last Exposition was indebted to the American Art Union of New York for all the expense of insurance and transportation of the pictures borrowed". Bierstadt then reprimands his correspondent for not paying his bills, "debts of this kind have caused the Art Union to fail." Bierstadt then tells Mr. Cleveland "I loaned as well as many other artists money to the Art Union, and was told that we would be paid as soon as Louisville paid up. Signed "Albert Bierstadt". A superb, frustrated letter about debts related to both the art union and he, himself.
