Cukor begins asking his correspondent about news of his home, "you know, about the dogs and how everything was looking at the house...." He continues with a report of his expenses and difficulties of using the franc. "So I didn't use the Letter of Credit...I borrowed 200,000 francs (don't faint that's only about $600) from M.G.M. Paris Office promising to repay them in francs...which indeed I did...I also paid for a car and chauffeur which I was in the south of France. Then I engaged a car...to make the three day tour from Cap Ferrat to Paris...I bought myself some socks and sweater and ties, etc...Michael Pearman was with me and has kept an itemized account of my expenditures - tips, cables...." He continues with a discussion of meeting the British author, W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965). "Actually I accomplished some very important work with Maugham. One of the stories we considered for Garbo is 'Sapho' by Daudet - Maugham very kindly read the script and I had two very long meetings with him; he made brilliant and practical suggestions for the treatment of the story...When in Paris at Walter Wanger's request, I had long conferences with Agents. Writers, Actors' agents, etc. and made very important contacts and actually spent a good deal of time on the Garbo-Wanger proposition...I go into all this...because I do think a good deal of the...trip can be deducted as legitimate business expense...." He writes to his father about the progress of his medical practice, his personal thoughts and other news. In reference to Mr. Dessaux, Laennec comments about Paris. "Paris is so big and the whirlwind of business is of such constant speed that unless it is a case of absolute necessity or a matter of pressing business, we can rarely see each other...." He then shows his understanding that his family's needs are greater than his own personal wants by agreeing to forego his quarterly allowance so that the family home in Quimper can get a new roof. "I will therefore write to Michaud today to send me 100F only and to keep the remaining one hundred francs, to which I will add, if possible, the whole July trimester. I will see to that in advance. Actually, my business is doing quite well. Practicing medicine brings in more money every day; but I absolutely must quit the journal of medicine. I will give it up on April 1. It will mean a hundred 'pistoles' less in my purse, but it is a necessary sacrifice. Had I kept the job, I would never have been able to finish my treatise on pathologic anatomy, which I hope will be ready for publication by the end of the year. I will not write to you very often between now and then because I would like to devote, if possible, all the time that my patients will let me have to the writing of my book...today is Sunday. I have not gone to mass yet...I have to see a particular patient one league away from home at 11 o'clock...." He ends by sending his father, "warm kisses, my dear daddy...." He discusses photography in reply to his correspondent's letter. "Your questions are difficult to answer simply! You must define 'abstract'. I think there can be no Abstract photograph (ex1/2ect [sic] the Photogram). I prefer to think of the term 'Extract'...The question really is: do we communicate with others. or really just talk to ourselves? I think 95% of contemporary art is simply talking to ourselves; reaffirming the 'cult' or tribal relationships. I personally feel that the expression of subconscious feelings, etc., is only valid when such expression really touches others and contributes something to their understanding. Very little photography does this, I am afraid...True communication requires more than just creating an image in the minds[sic] eye, and then producing it as a print! No matter what this image means to you, it does not have essential value unless it can create a sense of elevation and comprehension of the realities of the world and of the spirit on the part of the spactator [sic]. Here is where the study of the human situation is as important...than [sic] the study of photography....We make hundreds of...photographers [sic] that say precisely nothing of real human importance...." He writes to the art publisher, Waldemar Klein, Thames and Hudson publishing house. "Thank you for your kind lines and the uncommonly active support in the matter of the lithos for Hungary. Frau Dr. Furtwangler, with whom we just spent a week n St. Moritz, was also delighted. I chose the head of the suffering Christ under the assumption that it was a 'speaking' image which reminds us how humanity is becoming nationless in this world where the byword democracy is on everyone's lips while displacement and liquidation of entire peoples is continuing without a care and the number of concentration camps, refugee camps is increasing yearly. The individual has become an abstraction, maybe therein lies the deeper cause of the tragedy of the most recent past, perhaps the graphic artist may keep his eyes open and put the writing on the wall, yet it will serve as a warning to nobody as long as society keeps putting its head in the sand, just as the ostrich does when danger looms. I thank you very kindly, ,and I wish you all the success that a good purpose deserves. I was never in Budapest [and] would have to depend on photos and postcards to produce a painting. Respected modern artists are wont to do this, but it is not for me. Thus we'll have to make do with current subject, perhaps it will be recommended in church circles in Germany. May I also suggest to send a number of prospectuses to Mr. Walter Neurath [co-publisher with Klein] ..with the request to advertise the litho in England and the States, where his publishing house maintains contacts to art dealers...." He signs, "Oskar Kokoschka."

He writes to "Georg" regarding a review. "I was still too moved by what you wrote about me in your article, which I had read just then. Your text is tight, multi-faceted and brilliant. Beautiful the sentence:'mountain ranges, islands, cloudy skies and starry nights are all forms in random constellations.' What is attributed to these forms raises the spirit of their [elixir] to mountain range-spirit, island-spirit, starry night-spirit…." He thanks Georg and signs, "Hans Arp."

He writes to Dunbar referring to his novel Martin Eden (1909) about a struggling young writer. It was first serialized in the Pacific Monthly magazine from September 1908 to September 1909, then published in book form by Macmillan in September 1909. "My blushes prevent me from stating in any detail my appreciation of all the good things you have to say about MARTIN EDEN; but...you say that Socialism, Nietzscheanism and Agnosticism, are a bit passe...I can' t agree with you...While I am certainly no disciple of Nietzsche, I am nevertheless compelled to believe that at no time before the very present has the Nietzschean thought been so vital and wide-reaching. Agnosticism always has been and always will be....Socialism...includes your Cosmism, Industrial unionism, Materialistic Monism, and all the other Isms under the sun...I don't know whether you have seen the chapter in MARTIN EDEN where the 'Real Dirt' discussed Material Monism versus Industrial Unionism...he never belonged to a labor union...." He signs in a large hand, Jack London.'' The paper is browned and somewhat brittle with small fold tear above text.
