STIEGEL, HENRY WILLIAM. (1729-86). German born, American ironmaster and glass-maker. In 1750, he emigrated to Philadelphia and by 1758 he was operating an iron factory in Lancaster County, PA, that became one of the most successful in the colonies. In 1764, he opened the first of his three glass factories, and in addition to making standard sheet glass, he employed German, Venetian, and English glassblowers to make some of the most widely marketed glass tableware of the time. Although his glass wares were not signed and there are several varieties of Stiegel ware, including those colored wine-red, amethyst, and blue, and some with molded patterns, purists prefer to limit the term to a fine flint or green variety of glassware with engraved or enameled decoration.

![He writes to the art publisher, Waldemar Klein, Thames and Hudson publishing house. "Thank you for your kind lines and the uncommonly active support in the matter of the lithos for Hungary. Frau Dr. Furtwangler, with whom we just spent a week n St. Moritz, was also delighted. I chose the head of the suffering Christ under the assumption that it was a 'speaking' image which reminds us how humanity is becoming nationless in this world where the byword democracy is on everyone's lips while displacement and liquidation of entire peoples is continuing without a care and the number of concentration camps, refugee camps is increasing yearly. The individual has become an abstraction, maybe therein lies the deeper cause of the tragedy of the most recent past, perhaps the graphic artist may keep his eyes open and put the writing on the wall, yet it will serve as a warning to nobody as long as society keeps putting its head in the sand, just as the ostrich does when danger looms. I thank you very kindly, ,and I wish you all the success that a good purpose deserves. I was never in Budapest [and] would have to depend on photos and postcards to produce a painting. Respected modern artists are wont to do this, but it is not for me. Thus we'll have to make do with current subject, perhaps it will be recommended in church circles in Germany. May I also suggest to send a number of prospectuses to Mr. Walter Neurath [co-publisher with Klein] ..with the request to advertise the litho in England and the States, where his publishing house maintains contacts to art dealers...." ![To Italian explorer Count Paolo Andreani, whose travels in 1790 along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers provided a journal of extreme interest in post-Revolutionary America. “I had the pleasure of receiving your Letter, by the Servant whom you sent…and have done my utmost to obey your Commands. The Barometer was sent to the German the day you left Philadelphia, and I often called upon him to urge its completion, but the poor man remains so extremely ill that I am afraid he is going to take a longer…than you are…I have not been able to get it quite finished, but as you told me you could manage to fill it yourself I am in hopes it will answer. The Tubes that I took…were much too large…the others would not go through the Ivory screw, etc….” Thornton continues, “I wish the Execution may please you though I do not think it lies so safely as if it went closer into the Groove…There is nothing to pay for it, and I only lament that it was not in my power to get it complete...Miss Brodeau [Thornton’s future wife] returns her best compliments to you, and wishes, with your Friend that you may have an agreeable journey.” In a lengthy postscript, “My compliments to Mr. Madison and Mr. Trumbul”.
