This is a beautifully handwritten letter to Mr. Austin. In this letter he refers to a forthcoming trip to South America. Two years after this letter, he produced his painting "Heart of the Andes" (1859), now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York City. He explains how he "attended to" his correspondent's "curiosities". "I had to pack them myself, as nobody else would have done it properly. I found most of the Alcohol evaporated from the jars which I replaced. I secured the stoppers and packed all in a box. I have my doubts about the Eel...I will find some place to store all of your trays safely...Shumway...has taken a new studio...and is doing very well...I am nearly dead with the great amount of work which I have had to do lately...Please tell Judge Skinner that I intend to undertake his pictures simultaneously after my return from South America...." Signed, "F.E. Church."

To Italian explorer Count Paolo Andreani, whose travels in 1790 along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers provided a journal of extreme interest in post-Revolutionary America. “I had the pleasure of receiving your Letter, by the Servant whom you sent…and have done my utmost to obey your Commands. The Barometer was sent to the German the day you left Philadelphia, and I often called upon him to urge its completion, but the poor man remains so extremely ill that I am afraid he is going to take a longer…than you are…I have not been able to get it quite finished, but as you told me you could manage to fill it yourself I am in hopes it will answer. The Tubes that I took…were much too large…the others would not go through the Ivory screw, etc….” Thornton continues, “I wish the Execution may please you though I do not think it lies so safely as if it went closer into the Groove…There is nothing to pay for it, and I only lament that it was not in my power to get it complete...Miss Brodeau [Thornton’s future wife] returns her best compliments to you, and wishes, with your Friend that you may have an agreeable journey.” In a lengthy postscript, “My compliments to Mr. Madison and Mr. Trumbul”. Signed, “William Thornton”.

In 1764, he opened the first of his three glass factories, and in addition to making standard sheet glass, he employed German, Venetian, and English glassblowers to make some of the most widely marketed glass tableware of the time. Although his glass wares were not signed and there are several varieties of Stiegel ware, including those colored wine-red, amethyst, and blue, and some with molded patterns, purists prefer to limit the term to a fine flint or green variety of glassware with engraved or enameled decoration.

This is a letter written in Ciry's beautiful hand to a woman who admired his work. It reads, "Madam, There is no reason for me to forgive you, quite the opposite. I must thank you for sending me such a moving letter. What you say about my work truly touched me, but what touched me even more is what you said about your daughter, about what my work is giving her. So how could I ignore your request? So, yes, I will make a drawing that I will send you before Christmas, for Mireille, to whom I wish a good recovery; medicine is constantly making progress so you should both be hopeful. Please accept my regards, to which I add my thoughts and all my sympathy. Be courageous. Yours truly," signed "Michel Ciry."
