To Mr. Wells, “I send you a scrap of a letter from Genl. Albert Van Schelle of Brussels, Belgium. The Genl. is doubtless one of, if not the leading Red Cross man of Belgium for active work. He was sent by Belgium to study the Red Cross work in the Cuban War and came direct to me in Santiago and remained some months, and finished by selecting one of my accomplished young lady assistants for a wife…The General desired to introduce some important business into Cuba, if feasible and wishes me to aid in the forwarding of his Communications which I have done…You will observe that I am always ‘President’ to the General—and he would be glad to hear through you that I could not be allowed to remain otherwise, and that it is the intention that the future shall outdo the past. Du Bois answers three questions: “1. Was your scientific ‘debut” easy or difficult? 2. Did means of living …enable you to make yourself known in science? 3. What work…made yourself more famous? Which do you consider your masterpiece?” In reply, Du Bois answers. “(1) If I had been dependent on recognition by White American universities, I would had no chance even though I had a Harvard Ph. D., and had studied three semesters at Berlin. But in our Negro colleges I easily found work. Their standards were lower than the white schools but they were raising them and in this I could help. (2) I had no private means but was dependent entirely on my salary as teacher and writer. (3) I began in the United States the scientific study of the problems of cultural contact between whites and blacks. My historical studies of the Negro are most important, ‘The Suppression of the African slave trade in America,’ ‘Black Reconstruction,’ and the ‘World and Africa’….” Boldly signed, “W.E.B. Du Bois.”

An extremely early letter to a Doctor. [Moses Gaster, chief rabbi of the Sephardic communities in England from 1887-1918] "I still haven't had word from you about the university courses, as you so kindly promised. But, the matter does not allow for delay, so I ask you to be kind enough to let me have it as soon as possible. The delegation of Russian A.C. members is going to Vienna next week. We must not expect peaceful results from these negotiations, though. In Vienna they already know about the Kharkov decisions and there is absolutely no inclination to make any concessions at all. Thus a struggle will follow, and in the very near future. We must proceed as quickly as possible in order not to be caught unaware again. At the request of the Russian A.C. members I sent Mr. B. Mossinson, a good public speaker, to London yesterday to launch the campaign there. He will allow himself the liberty of paying you a visit, dear doctor, and I ask you, for the sake of the cause, to support him. You may find it appropriate for him to take part inthe Johnston meeting on the 20th. In any case, he is completely at your disposal." In conclusion Weizmann thanks Gaster for a "Speedy reply regarding the university courses and the propaganda effort .." Signed, "Dr. Ch. Weizmann."

This is a very rare early, holograph essay titled "The Sargasso Sea," "Composition, Geo. S. Patton, March 6, 1899." The essay, was written as a class assignment relating to the Bermuda Triangle area in the Carribean. [his spellings and punctuation retained]: "The Sargasso Sea is one of the unexplored mysteries of the world. Though discovered as soon as North America no one has ever yet explained its unfathomable depths for the weed is so thick that niether steam nor sail can find its way to the center.... As many of the Spanish Galleons were loaded with gold it is thought it may be a perfect treasure house in the midst of the Atlantic, and also resting place for the unburied bones of many a sea hero, slain in battle or by the elements. There is quite a vivid description of the experiences of man who was left on a wreck which was supposed to be sinking but which floated into the middle of the Sargasso Sea...."

A good letter organizing a meeting of the action committee for the Zionist World Congress. "This year the congress will take place in early summer, possibly as early in July . the election of the delegates for the Congress of Zionists is by direct and secret ballot - the other election modalities are up to the individual national organizations. However, these have to obtain approval of their elections made from the central A[ction] C[ommittee] at least three months before the elections. We therefore ask you to inform us without delay in which manner you are proposing to conduct this years elections." Signed "Herzl" as committee chairman and "Mamorek" as secretary.

To Dr. Josef Cohn thanking him for "your regular reports." Weizmann continues by discussing monetary matters. "I have received nothing from Mr. Sonneborn's representative, . I further understand that Lourie from San Francisco has instructed his people here to pay £500 to us, but this is bound up with so many formalities . I would . prefer that they should pay in dollars in America direct to the Institute, because here the financial restrictions are troublesome." Weizmann then asks, "Would you kindly tell Dr. Prebluda that we are sending him the data and samples for which he asks, but it will take a little time until we can satisfy all his requirements, as they mean some laboratory experiments before we can answer all his questions definitely. I would also ask you to send me a statement on the finances of the Foundation." In conclusion he thanks his correspondent for "sending me the account of Dorothy Thompson's meeting." It is signed, in his customary turquoise ink, "Ch. Weizmann." In a lengthy postscript he suggests, "get into touch again with Dr. Levinthal. Now that he is President of the Z.O.A. perhaps he could stir up his people in Philadelphia."

This is a form letter sent to a few colleagues for the Zionist Organization, Action Committee. "We have addressed the Russian members of the A.C. with a circular asking them to mark the passages in their reports that should be reproduced in 'Die Welt.' We are very sorry that this has not yet happened, because even though we do not know whether one or another published article would cause awkward or even harmful feelings. Therefore, our colleagues have to provide us with this preliminary work. And then, naturally we will take their wishes into account. It would be even better if you would - in addition to the distributed circulars from which we can extract information suited for publication in your area of activity on a monthly basis. Of course, this is solely a wish and not an order. And we would appreciate if we would be able to publish entirely authentic reports. Please send your letters to the Secretary's Offices of the Congress Bureau, attention Dr. I. Shalit." Signed, "With Zionist greetings 'Herzl'" as Chairman and "Mamorek," as secretary.

An angry letter to L. Hefetz, challenging an article by Joseph Frankl. "When the war [WWI] broke out, I, together with Y. Ben-Zvi (we were both students at the University in Constantinople) went to the military commander of Jerusalem, Zecai [?] Bey, with a request to organize a militia to defend the country. The commander agreed, and several tens of young people, among them the author Y. H. Brenner, enlisted and already began military training. But when the matter became known to Jemal pasha, who was then in Damascus, he gave an order to dissolve this unit. I do not know from where he [Frankl] took some document dated April 6. The story took place in the month of September 1914. As for the 'Zion Mule Corps,' we both opposed it (Jabotinsky also opposed it, and did not join Trumpeldor) but there is no truth to his [Frankl's] claim that we opposed the Legion; Ben-Zvi and I founded the American branch of the Legion, as part which we returned to Aretz [Eretz Israel]. I have no knowledge of any German Foreign Ministry documents about Ben-Zvi or me. I have never heard of any and doubt that Frankl has seen them. There is not one bit of truth in the story that through Brandeis we approached . (?) to allow us to return. This is a foolish made-up story. In Constantinople there was no American Ambassador named Elkins. No copy was ever sent to the German Foreign Ministry. And from where Frankl pulled these made-up fairy tales - I do not know. When did this article appear in The Jewish Chronicle? I will send a denial of this made-up nonsense to the newspaper." Signed, "With thanks, D. Ben Gurion."
