He writes to John Ridgely Carter, an American diplomat stationed in Great Britain. Caruso writes, "Confidential" at the top of the page. "I am sorry I cannot give you a definite reply because the terms of my contract with the Royal Opera Syndicate require that all engagements of the kind you propose must pass through the Syndicate . Covent Garden . ." He signs, "Enrico Caruso." Framed with a beautiful photograph by Mishkin of New York showing Carulo, full length, and  costumed.

MENOTTI, GIAN-CARLO. (1911-2007) Italian-born American composer and librettist who wrote the classic Christmas opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors", among about two dozen other operas intended to appeal to popular taste. He won the Pulitzer Prize for two of them, "The Consul" (1950) and "The Saint of Bleecker Street" (1955). He founded the noted Festival del du mondi (Festival of the Two Worlds) in 1958 and its American counterpart, Spoleto Festival in the United States, in 1977.

BRATTON, JOHN W.. (1867-1947) American composer who, along with lyricist Walter H.Ford penned some of the late 1800s biggest standards, including “I Love You the Same Old Way”, “My Boy Bill” and “Darling Sue”. His songs were played at every presidential inauguration between 1896-1944.

He pens  four bars of music with lyrics in French from  his "Les cent vierges" which he titles  below the music and then signs, "Ch. Lecocq."
LECOCQ, CHARLES. (1832 -1918) French musical composer. His opera La fille de Madame Angot was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively, and which has since gained and retained popularity. Lecocq produced a large number of operettas, though he never equaled his early triumph in La fille de Madame Angot.

JANÁCEK, LEOS. 1854-1928), Czech composer, the most eminent of the early 20th century, known for his style derived from Moravian folk music. He directed the Czech Philharmonic (1881-88); founded and taught in the Brunn Organ School (1882-1920); and taught at the State Conservatory of Prague (1920-25). His international reputation was established with his opera Jenufa (1904, rev.1916), which, like his Slavonic Mass (1926), was influenced by the rhythm and accents of the Moravian Language. His other works include The Makropolous Affair (1926) and The Cunning little Vixen (1924).

This letter regards, Kabalevsky's inability to attend a function in honor of Stravinsky. He sends his regrets. It reads, "To my deepest regret I will not be able to attend the breakfast in honor of I.F. Stravinsky. Yesterday after the morning which I of course attended I had suddenly felt not myself. Something with my heart. I couldn't even attend the same evening's concert, and could not fall asleep that night. I beg you to forward to Igor Feodorovich...my deepest regrets. Holiday writes in pencil, on yellow lined paper,  on the back of a letter from a priest, Father O' Connor.  She begins with her reason for choosing the back of letter.  "Louie, I am writing this on the back of my Prests [sic] letter.  You know Father OConnor Boston.  I did a very silly thing I toled [sic] you. You reaily [sic] must go for that that I got to say Bitch dont [sic] get me wrong I am not angry Just feel sort of cheap and dirty.   I am also sure  you dont  realy [sic] mean to hurt me other wise I would have made a awful [sic]  stink...I am going to make a few changes here. We are still frends [sic] I hope she doesnt [sic] break your heart."  She signs, "Lady Day."
HOLIDAY, BILLIE. (1915-59) American songwriter and jazz singer, also called "Lady Day". Considered to be the supreme jazz singer of her day, she made recordings with Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, and Count Basie. She toured with Count Basie and the Artie Shaw Band. She is admired for her intensely dramatic style of phrasing and diction, the seeming fragility of her voice, and yet its uniquely powerful and moving character.

 Hawkins wirtes to a friend regarding musical matters.  It reads, "Dear John, I would love to have you hear Lucie's new piece. It is the difference between innovation and originality!  Did you ever see the announcement about her winning the Koussevetsky Award?  Do you remember saying hello at the Public Library when I was standing near a man I had just met? We have become friends and he is now on our board.  Here is a review of fall performances at Kennedy Center. May I phone you in a few days to see if you are free and if I can send you tickets?"  The letter is signed, "Best, Erick".  A fine example of music discussion between colleagues.
HAWKINS, ERICK. (1904-94) American dancer, choreographer, became soloist and first male dancer in the Martha Graham Dance Company and later married and divorced Graham; formed his own dance company in mid 1950's.

This war date letter is written to Major W. Piercy. “Thank you for the 3rd Pfte [piano forte] part.
