This is a letter from Hesse to Mr. von Guenther, which reads, "Neither my time nor my poor health allows for a letter, so please forgive me if I bother you with a naked bibliographical request. My wife would very much like to have a German edition of Chekhov's plays. I own several selections of his stories in translation, among them the first volume of your translation of the Collected Works, publ. by Hutten & Loning. But I do not own an edition of the plays and would like to fulfill my wife's wish, no later than for her birthday in September. Please let me know if you know of such an edition. Or can a volume of his plays in your Collected Works be expected to appear in the forseeable future? With best wishes," and signed in full "Hermann Hesse".

To “Mr. Boucher de Perthes, President of the royal Society of Emulation” “I knew your name, Sir, for having seen it often attached to beautiful verse…I am delighted that, verse or prose, everything said is equally remarkable. You express superbly the mission of thinkers in our times…toward the suffering classes; you teach and you do. This is beautiful, Sir, and I wholeheartedly congratulate you. I certainly will read with the greatest interest the important work for which you will send me proofs. My studies have the same objects as yours. God, man, nature, here is the circle I pace endlessly, and, please forgive me the comparison…I am still in the process of stating the issues. Send me your book, Sir, my curiosity demands it; my admiration begs you….” Signed, “Please accept the assurance of my deepest respect Victor Hugo.”

“Owing to the fact that a long-standing defect of vision causes me to read slowly, I regret that I must say no to your kind invitation: for I am engaged on a piece of work involving much research and permits no extra-curricular activities…It was kind of you to pass on my request, about the anthology for the Britannica…I am wondering whether, if the Britannica doesn’t want to publish the anthology, the firm would be willing to allow it to come out elsewhere. It seems hardly fair for an author to permit a year’s work and 20,000 words of original writing to lie indefinitely on the shelf….”

The author writes to the publisher, J.M. Dent, "Dear Mr. Dent, I am sending with this a three decker that made some little mark when it came out as you will see by the notices, in the small hope that it might seem good enough to you to use in your series. The copyright belongs now to the author and I had hopes that at your popular prices, a good novel might get its 'second wind' in another dress.
