(1909-2006) African-American dancer, choreographer, songwriter, author, educator and activist who was trained as an anthropologist.

Check from the Metropolitan Opera Association, New York, endorsed on verso, signed, “Katherine Dunham.” In 1963, Dunham choreographed the Met's production of "Aida," becoming the first African American to choreograph for the Metropolitan Opera.
