EUBIE BLAKE, James Hubert Blake

(1887-1983) American composer, lyricist, and pianist of ragtime, jazz, and popular music. In 1921, Blake and longtime collaborator Noble Sissle wrote the Broadway musical "Shuffle Along," one of the first Broadway musicals to be written and directed by African Americans.

The score for the musical about Blake's life and music includes 15 songs and measures 11 3/4 x 9 inches. On the biographical page, page 4, Blake signed on the upper margin in black pen, "....Eubie Blake." Blake was a critical figure in African American music in the 20th century.
