Vibrant pastel drawing outlined in India Ink, Signed, Mexico [1936].
Negulesco's early drawing shows a barefoot male figure with a full basket walking away from the viewer. The basket might be filled with fruit en route to a market. The figure might be a composite image of farmers or venders Negulesco encountered on a trip to Mexico. Signed in India Ink, "J. Negulesco '36/Mexico." This is a charming and bright composition measuring 7.5 by 9 inches, from an early period in his Hollywood career. Framed with museum quality material in 5/8 inch black satin wood, white mat and floated onto a dark gray mat. Frame measures 15 x 16 3/4.
Negulesco started his career as a painter, trained in Paris, taught by Brancusi who was also Romanian born. Negulesco worked as a set designer with Jean Cocteau and Picasso then shifted to film at the age of 34 first in movie production then as director. He remained a talented artist and continued to draw throughout his successful Hollywood career.
