FERDINAND BAC

(1859-1952) French artist, writer and garden designer.

"What is the dictatorship of incompetence?" Colorful political cartoon, in French, signed and dated, "FBac May 1948," rendered in ink and artist's pencil measuring 8.25 x 10.6.

Translation: " Topic ( Of the time of Louis IV) 'What is the dictatorship of incompetence?' It's when you acknowledge that , while you were away, someone loyal to you took steps to avoid a major mistake, and all you have to say is: It was for me to decide. I am in command." Bac's cartoon is a likely critique of France's then president Vincent Auriol who presided over the Fourth Republic from 1947-54, a time of political and economic turmoil.
