MERCE CUNNINGHAM
CUNNINGHAM, MERCE. SIGNED ORIGINAL Art, Choreographic Drawing.
MERCE CUNNINGHAM. Original Choreographic Drawing Signed, for two of his dances, "Signals" and "Winterbranch" titled by Cunningham. The renown choreographer uses a red pen to layout dance movements for two of his dances. Several stick figures followed by movement lines fill up the 8.5 x 11 inch page. Cunningham SIGNED in full in black ink in the lower right corner, possibly at a later date. "Winterbranch" debuted in 1964 and "Signals" in 1970. Condition: horizontal folds show, otherwise fine. The drawing floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 16 x 18 3/4. The drawing is undated.
Cunningham's dances emphasize strength and agility, and his choreography notoriously demands of his dancers difficult, nearly impossible physical feats of athleticism. Along with Paul Taylor, Cunningham was often billed as the greatest living modern dance choreographer. Cunningham was long-term collaborator with composer John Cage.
