VIVIAN FUCHS

(1908-99) British geologist and Antarctic explorer.

Original Drawing Signed with Autograph Letter Signed, Cambridge, 8vo, England, July 3, 1995.

Fuchs is best remembered for leading the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition along with Edmund Hillary. Both co-authored, "The Crossing of Antarctica" (1958). Fuchs sketches a bird floating on a piece of ice likely an image referencing his Antarctic expedition. The drawing is rendered in black ink on verso of a 3 x 6 inch index card. He explains the sketch in the letter to Mrs. Polk written on his personalized printed stationery. He "unhappily" didn't have the time to draw five birds as she apparently requested and suggests she make four copies of this drawing. Signed in full.
