SPECTROPIA, or Surprising Spectral Illusions showing GHOSTS EVERYWHERE and Of Any Colour, First Series, London: Griffith and Farran, 1865.

This first edition of Spectropia included sixteen illustrations of which thirteen were hand colore. The idea behind the creation of this curious and visually appealing book was to challenge the contemporary belief in spiritualism whose adherents claimed to see ghosts. The introduction explains that the book is divided into two sections: "directions for seeing the spectres...and...the manner in which the spectres are produced...." The author's purpose was to demonstrate that ghosts were optical illusions. The "List of Plates" identifies what color illusion a plate will create. ""Plate II. this black figure will give a white spectre." This edition is in good condition, measuring 9.5 x 7.25 imches, with half-leather and marbled boards, removal in small area at the top front cover, rubbed, soiled end papers and some loss along the inner spine, internal foxing and soiling. With two bookplates. All spectres in fine condition.
