Rare Transformation Playing Card
On a three of hearts playing card measuring 2 1/2 x 3 5/8 inches, Thackery incorporated the three red hearts into a pen and ink drawing he titled, "Allegorical Piece. Britannia treading under foot the Hydra of Anarchy and looking up to the British Lion." The card comes with two provenance notes. The first is a note explaining the card's origin. "I send you a card illustrated by Thackery when he came over on the steamship with my sister Mrs. Lowell in 1852...." Thackery went on a lecture in the United States between 1852-53. The second note dated January 1936 explains how the card passed into other hands. Thackery is best remembered for his novel, "Vanity Fair"
