ERICK HAWKINS

(1904-94) American dancer, choreographer, became soloist and first male dancer in the Martha Graham Dance Company and later married and divorced Graham; formed his own dance company in mid 1950's.

Hawkins wirtes to a friend regarding musical matters. It reads, "Dear John, I would love to have you hear Lucie's new piece. It is the difference between innovation and originality! Did you ever see the announcement about her winning the Koussevetsky Award? Do you remember saying hello at the Public Library when I was standing near a man I had just met? We have become friends and he is now on our board. Here is a review of fall performances at Kennedy Center. May I phone you in a few days to see if you are free and if I can send you tickets?" The letter is signed, "Best, Erick". A fine example of music discussion between colleagues.
